NWEP Site investigation
Phase 4 & 5 – Manchester
ESL undertook a range of Site Investigation and Ground Investigation works to determine the condition of various assets along the route, including bridges and retaining walls. This was necessary in order to determine the suitability of these assets to support overhead line electrification equipment.
The scope of works included dimension surveys, visual inspections, ferro scanning, paint testing, masonry coring works and exploratory trial pits. Gaining access was key and required a range of methods including Mobile Elevated Working Platforms, Scaffolding and Pontoons. Liaison with lineside neighbours was critical, in particular where third party access was required.
The scope included a number of viaducts built in the late 19th century, where no detailed source records existed.
ESL undertook topographical surveys, exploratory trial holes and core samples to find out the information needed to create foundation and wall bracket designs for new OLE structures.
